Who We Are
In 1975, a group of civil engineering students constructed Mortar-mer, the school’s first concrete canoe, and paddled on Lake Washington. This marked the beginning of one of the oldest engineering clubs on campus.
We pride ourselves in creating an inclusive and innovative environment that allows our members to become successful future engineers. Here, anyone can advance their skills and knowledge of engineering through practical experience.
The Competition
Every year, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) runs the Concrete Canoe Regional and National Competitions for student teams all over the country. Our team here at UW competes in the Pacific Northwest Regionals.
Contestants are scored on a wide array of metrics including a project proposal, technical presentation, canoe design, and racing performance. The teams that score highest across these metrics at their respective regional competitions get to advance to the national competition, where they face off against some of the best programs and engineers in the world.
